Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming to Netflix in June
After not doing this piece for the last few months, I felt it necessary to bring it back. June is full of a lot of original programming for Netflix, but there are some solid movies that are going to start streaming this month, including one of the best movies of 2000’s. Here are my picks for the best movies coming to Netflix in June.

5 – JUST FRIENDS (Roger Kumble, 2005)
Who doesn’t love Ryan Reynolds in a fat suit? I know I do. Just Friends is a delightful and hilarious comedy about being in the dreaded friend-zone and high school horrors. Ryan Reynolds is at the top of his game as Chris Brander, a successful and attractive music producer who returns home years after he was looked at as an overweight loser. Amy Smart is really charming as Chris’s long-time crush and Anna Ferris steals the show as Chris’s temperamental artist. Funny, sweet, and relatable, Just Friends is just great.
4 – MIRACLE (Gavin O’Connor, 2004)
Here’s how you know you have a great sports movie on your hands: you know what’s going to happen, yet you are still on the edge of your seat. That’s the case with Miracle, Gavin O’Connor’s spectacular sports drama about the greatest upset in sports history. Kurt Russell gives one of the best performances of his career as Herb Brooks, the legendary coach who lead a young and inexperienced United States hockey team over the experienced, intimidating USSR team. This is an emotional, rousing, inspiring sports film with some brilliantly shot hockey sequences.
3 – STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (Rian Johnson, 2017)
Star Wars: The Last Jedi was the most divisive movie of 2017. Some people loved it while others hated it. I was in the middle. It’s a very good movie with bold ideas but also has some story flaws along the way. I’ve only seen this movie once, but this is a movie the requires multiple viewings. Director Rian Johnson made the most ambitions, audacious Star Wars film to date, challenging us as a viewer and taking the film in a direction nobody thought it would go. I am excited to watch this movie again and dig deeper into the stories, characters, and direction of Johnson.
2 – IN BRUGES (Martin McDonagh, 2008)
In Bruges is one of the great comedies of the 2000’s. This masterful dark comedy shows another side to the gangster genre while also being a top-notch comedy, thoughtful character piece, and beautiful tour of Bruges. Colin Ferrell gives the best performance of his career as a guilt-ridden gangster who’s boss (a scene-stealing Ralph Fiennes) sends him and his partner (a terrific Brendan Gleeson) into hiding in Bruges. McDonagh’s script is perfect, with a great combination of drama, comedy, action and giving us fully fleshed out characters. If you haven’t seen In Bruges, you’re missing out on a comedy classic.
1 – THE DEPARTED (Martin Scorsese, 2006)
Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest directors to ever get behind the camera (for my money, he is the best to ever do it). After making classics like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, and The Aviator, Scorsese still had no Oscars under his belt, which is still a travesty, as he should have won for at least three of those (Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York). But in 2006, Scorsese was finally awarded his overdue Oscar and rightly so for The Departed, a slick, twisty, suspenseful cop drama with one of the great ensembles of the 21st century. Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon are at their best as two men on opposite sides of the law. DiCaprio plays a cop who goes undercover in the mob and Damon plays a mole in the police unit sent by the mob. Jack Nicholson, Vera Farmiga, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, and a brilliant Mark Wahlberg round out this incredible ensemble. Scorsese dives deep into trust, identity, corruption, and looks at how being raised affects you and your future. The Departed is a masterpiece in every sense of the word and is far and away the best movie coming to Netflix in June.
